'Drawing is the bedrock of my work , it is the first stage apart from selecting visually, in the creative process. It is through drawing that I internalise the spirit of my subject. It is not the absolute visual reproduction that I seek but the very essence of it. My sketchbook is always with me and if I am away travelling as soon as I return I will begin work in my studio still holding the memories of the place.'
