Places of Pilgrimage
Painting & Prints by
Ian Scott Massey

Ian is touring the UK with a series of exhibitions, the next will be held at The Studio First-View Gallery at the National Trust’s Stourhead property.
He describes the exhibitions as -

"Places of Pilgrimage portrays sacred sites, locations where great events have happened, settings which inspired music and poetry and special places of all kinds to which people are drawn. The exhibition is touring England over two years.
Stourhead is important to me because it reflects a time when the aristocracy of Britain became obsessed, not with making money or fighting in foreign wars, but in competing with each other to create the most perfect landscapes. The results included Studley Royal and Stowe and, most importantly, Stourhead. Because here the intention was to create picture views, as though the landscape was a gallery of earth and water and trees and sky arranged to be walked through, with each view hung like a living picture on the wall. So, to an artist, Stourhead is like an art gallery on a scale never before imagined.”
